In 1884, a woman named Lucelia Mills Clark moved to the family farm and began writing a farm journal called “Let’s Eat.” She kept track of the weather, daily farm activities, illnesses, births, and most importantly, she recorded the business of feeding 10 people from scratch year round. She was primarily responsible for the chickens, sheep, gardens, & for preserving food for the entire family. In 1897 she wrote that she had “boiled sap all day, finished bottling syrup, 20 gallons, planted tomatoes and peppers.” Later that same year she wrote, “I have churned 6 lbs of butter, made dishtowels of ripped up sugar sacks, ironed, mended, and washed clothing.”
I feel connected to this woman born 100 years before me. That is why the Sweetwater Farm Journal is going to follow this tradition. It will be a monthly account of everything that happens on this farm. The good and the bad. The happy and the sad.
